Are you interested in Ikebana ? Ikebana is a Japanese traditional floral art having a long period of history. This particular floral art is different from European or American style of floral arrangement not only in its history but also in the concept and method of arrangement as well as the tools used for decorations.
Like we usually use floral foam to support flowers in a container when making European floral arrangements, we use what is called "Kenzan" that is made of metal.
On the flat metal plate, there are uncountable number of needles into which flower stems are inserted to hold flowers. Kenzan is very heavy because of its materials and it can be used almost forever. Therefore it can be used repeatedly unlike floral foam used for European arrangement.
One more well known item often used for Ikebana is called "Suiban". This is a shallow and flat type container. It is designed so that Kenzan can be easily placed in it. Due to these types of items, we can make a little bit different kind of floral decorations compared with European or American style arrangements.
While most of European arrangements feature and focus on flowers (petals), Ikebana arrangements often feature and focus on green leaves and curly branches. Sometimes we can find Ikebana arrangement that does not use even a single piece of flowers/petals.
By using Kenzan, we can arrange even thick (and a little bit heavy) branches on Suiban. We often enjoy arrangements featuring graceful curve using curly stuff such as willow etc that offers a totally different kind of atmosphere compared with European arrangements.
